Avoid Ear Infections & Tube Surgery with Regular Pediatric Chiropractic Care

One of the best kept secrets in chiropractic is how regular care can help decrease persistent ear infections!

Ear infections often develop when the eustachian tubes — the canals that regulate air pressure and prevent fluid build up — aren’t functioning properly. When the eustachian tubes aren’t functioning properly, fluid has a tough time properly draining from the middle ear space. This undrained fluid is more prone to becoming infected by viruses and bacteria that cause ear infections.

Where regular chiropractic care comes into play is through the nervous system. The eustachian tubes are controlled by the vagus nerve among others. These nerves come out of the upper cervical area at the top of the spine.

So, when bones in the upper cervical area of the spine are out of place (due to daily stresses, falls, the birthing process or any sort of tiny physical trauma), those bones are incorrectly putting pressure on the nerves that go to the eustachian tubes, blocking the proper nerve flow to the ears that is needed to drain the fluid in the ears.

In order to stop the upper cervical bones from putting pressure on the nerves that go to the eustachian bones, a neurologically-focused pediatric chiropractor will first do a thermal scan (no radiation) or an X-ray (age 5 and up) to detect the exact locations of the patient’s spinal misalignments, also called subluxations.

Once the spinal misalignments have been detected, it’s time for a gentle and specific chiropractic adjustment to move the bones off of the nerves and free up the nerve flow to the eustachian tubes once again.

However, it must be noted that this is not a one adjustment and done fix. Just like how going to the gym once won’t get you a six-pack, it will take a consistent commitment to chiropractic care in the beginning — but the results we see are often incredible: way fewer ear infections and avoidance of the ear tube surgery.
